with respect to the governor plans for tax reform, he has a plan , pro-growth plan to cut taxes for the middle class because he will allow them to save and invest tax-free. unlike president obama, he has no plans to raise taxes. president obama has plans to raise taxes in this term and the next term. if he does that, he will plunge us off the fiscal cliff to another recession. this is why this choice facing the american people is critical. >> bret: when you hear the obama campaign and all the folks say, and interview after interview say we want specifics of how these loopholes will close and how you will pay for $5 trillion in tax cuts, are we going to hear it tonight? >> i think what you will hear from governor romney is the same thing we heard from president reagan in 1986. in 1986, the last time we undertook substantial tax reform, president reagan or ticklated -- articulated his principles. he laid out the broad guideline and gue him in his negotiation with congress. we did something great for the american people back then. we pushed down rates. that created economic expansion. that

last four years, how in lord's name can they justify raising their taxes with these tax cuts. >> dan, look, there is plenty of fodder for this debate without that. but since that is so 11th hour, is that expected to be played up heavily tonight? >> i don't think the obama campaign doesn't think this will be a distraction, but perhaps this will be something that governor mitt romney will jump on at some point during the debate. it is interesting, the vice president made those comments yesterday while campaigning in north carolina. and right after that, the romney campaign jumped all over those remarks. in fact, they put together a conference call to draw attention to that. the obama campaign fighting back saying that's an act of desperation and what the vice president was talking about is that there was this climate over the last four years that were created by decisions that were made in the previous administration. and so, again, they don't see it as a distraction, but i wouldn't be surprised if it didn't come up tonight. >> all right, dan lothian, live for us in denver, a long day

they're being burieded by regulatio regulations, taxes, by borrowing. they're being buried by the obama administration's economic failures. >> major, does joe biden's statement, this video, do either play into the debate tonight? >> i don't think the video is going to play into the debate. you look at what pollsters find from surveying voters, they want to nope, especially tonight, what is your characterization of president obama, what's you've done for four years, mitt romney and what are you going to do going forward. i do not expect this to be about a video from 2007. i think if romney were to do that, it would be a strategic mistake. as for paul ryan, this has been part of a romney campaign tendency. everything from the convention, acutely so, maybe a bit before that. to take whatever sound bite of the day is and to build a narrative around that. that doesn't reenforce the larger one for the romney campaign. look, the american public is well aware of the economic situation our nation is in. it's a recovery, but the slowest and least satisfied since

these types of restrictions are like poll taxes and literacy tests. we need to fight back and keep on fighting back. we're very glad for the victory in pennsylvania but we hope that the justices around the country will change their mind. >> ben, you're in a hero's role in all this. i appreciate anything you do in for our country. i want to ask you something. this seems to be hand in glove with the same kind of dog whistle stuff they're doing to white working class voters. get them upset about welfare and food stamps so you get the blacks so they can't vote and the whites angry at the blacks so they'll vote republican. it does seem like a two-pronged effort. >> no, that's right. and, you know, race has really been injected into this race in ways that are really insidious, and when you hear somebody talk about folks are too lazy and knowing who he's talking about are single moms who are raising kids, who are working, who may number a county where there's no d.o.t. or in a county where the d.o.t. is open one day or may are a boss that if they have to go
